For many years I chose to work with Fairtrade gold wherever possible, as responsible sourcing has always been important to me.

However, with gold prices rising significantly in recent years, alongside the additional Fairtrade premium, it has become increasingly difficult to offer without pushing costs beyond what feels realistic for many of my clients. This wasn't a decision I took lightly, but after researching alternatives I've chosen to work with Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold.

SMO gold is fully traceable back to a single, responsibly operated mine, offering greater transparency about where the material comes from while meeting recognised standards for responsible mining. There is no difference in the quality of the gold itself — the distinction lies in its traceability and known origin.

This change allows me to continue working with responsibly sourced gold while offering greater clarity about where it comes from. Pieces made using SMO gold are also hallmarked with an additional SMO mark.
